Cap City Comedy Club Review: Date Night at the Domain

Last week, my husband and I visited the Cap City Comedy Club in The Domain for the first time. We went for a date night because we love seeing stand-up comedy, and one of the comics that I follow on Instagram, Mason James, was going to be performing. I bought the tickets when they came out, and they were reasonably priced.

TL;DR Quick Summary:

The Vibe: Located in North Austin’s The Domain. Beautiful atmosphere, free parking in the Pink Garage, and an intimate, three-level seating layout with no bad seats.

The Lounge: Arrive 1 hour early to enjoy the “Sci-Fi retro” lounge. It’s a great spot for photos/videos, but remember: drinks bought here do not count toward the showroom’s two-item minimum.

The “Two-Item” Rule: The club is sober-friendly! You must buy two items per person, but they can be food or non-alcoholic drinks.

The Show: Mason James delivers a fantastic, clean set (kid-friendly!) featuring mostly new material and a “notebook” segment for testing fresh jokes. He also takes live requests for his viral hits.

Bottom Line: Highly recommended for an intimate, high-energy date night in Austin.

Domain Location and Parking

Once I realized the Cap City Comedy Club was in The Domain, I was really happy because The Domain is beautiful, it has free parking, and it just has a great vibe. Speaking of parking, it is free at The Domain and there are tons of parking lots for the club. You want to park in the Pink Garage; it’s a very quick walk over to the venue. The Cap City Comedy Club is located close to Fleming’s Steakhouse, if you know where that is. When we went, it was January and the Christmas lights were still up in The Domain. For a date night, it was perfect. It had a beautiful vibe and there were a lot of people out, so it was a great atmosphere.

Arrival and the “Two-Item Minimum”

When you walk up to the club, you get your bag checked by security, then you walk in and present your ID for your tickets. Now, here is something you really need to know: I think it’s pretty standard for comedy clubs to have a two-drink limit to help support the club and the comedians, but the Cap City Comedy Club is sober-friendly. You don’t have to purchase two drinks; you only have to purchase two items. This is a per-person minimum, so each person in your party needs to purchase at least two items from their menu.

However, notice that when you walk into the club, there is a bar and a lounge area. This is not included in your two-item minimum. Save your two-item minimum for the actual seats where you’re watching the comedy show. Feel free to get a drink at this opening bar if you show up early because it has a really cool vibe. There is some really fun, vintage fantasy-style wallpaper—kind of like a sci-fi retro pin-up vibe. There is dark lighting, and it’s a really nice place to just hang out.

Seating and Atmosphere

The doors open two hours before showtime. I recommend getting there early because it’s just a nice place to be. My husband and I showed up one hour before showtime, and it was the perfect amount of time to look around, take some video for you guys to check out the atmosphere, and then go in to get our seats.

Once you’re done checking out the lounge area, you present your tickets and they will give you your seats. Our seats were a front-facing, two-top booth. It was perfect. We could see the stage and the performers very clearly. We were kind of in the back on the floor, what would be considered orchestra-style seating if we were in a large theater. The club is a nice, intimate area; it doesn’t feel like there’s a bad seat in the house. It doesn’t feel huge, so there are no screens that you’re going to need to watch like you would in a large amphitheater.

The club has at least three levels of seating:

  1. The floor seating (where we were).
  2. A set of seats behind the floor that is raised up a little bit to help with viewing.
  3. A whole balcony area.

The whole vibe is intimate and close-up, so you really feel like you and the comedian are looking at each other—which can be good or bad depending on if you want to get picked on!

The Show and Mason James

Once we sat down, our server was very attentive. He was really a hoot himself; he made us feel like the drinks we ordered exactly matched our personalities. I thought that was a nice little touch to match the vibe of a comedy club. My husband and I had some bonding time and snacks until the openers came on.

There were three openers before Mason James. The first was a five-minute crowd warm-up. He heckled two guys in the front row, which became a running joke for the entire evening that every comedian used. The guys in the front row were really good sports about it. The second comedian was named Eman, and he was really entertaining. The third comedian was also great, Luis DeJesus. Definitely follow this guy! I predict he will come up!

Then Mason James came on. If you follow him online, you’ve probably seen some of his viral jokes, but he didn’t just repeat his old material. He did a lot of new material I hadn’t seen. Toward the end, he even pulled out a notebook to try out some brand-new jokes, and they were really, really good.

He is a pretty clean comedian, which followed through in his set tonight. There were no inappropriate jokes, so he is someone you can watch with your kids sitting right by you (but not at CapCity – it’s 18 and up!). He also took joke requests. I’ve seen this with other comedians like Ryan Hamilton—if they have a viral following, they will often take requests for anyone who wants to see a certain joke live. He was down for all of them.

I really recommend Mason James as a comedian, and I highly recommend the Cap City Comedy Club in North Austin. Feel free to comment if you have any questions about CapCity Comedy Club or Mason James. I’ll do my best!
